The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show gets rolling next week, and the rumor mill is working overtime on what will be released or announced at the show. One confirmed showing will be from Samsung, according to several sources.

Samsung is bringing a potential iPod Touch competitor to market called the Galaxy Player. It’s based on the very popular Galaxy S phone with similar specifications minus the cellular connectivity capabilities.

Running the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, it includes features such as a 1 Ghz CPU, a 4 inch Super Clear LCD display screen with a resolution of 800 x 400, WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. It also features a 3.2 megapixel camera facing the rear of the device along with a front facing VGA camera. Anticipated memory configurations are 32GB, 16GB and 8GB options.

With the wild success of the Apple iPod Touch, some have tried to compete, but so far no one has been able to even come close. Depending on how well Samsung does with making the gaming experience on the Galaxy Player a desirable one, it could become a serious threat to the iPod Touch.

The other key turning point for Samsung will be the system used for delivering content to the device. With iTunes being the defacto standard for many people, Samsung has its work cut out for it.
