Seven time Cy Young Award winning pitcher Roger Clemens will be arraigned today on charges of perjury, lying to and obstruction of Congress. The legendary hurler is expected to enter a not guilty plea.

“I never took HGH or Steroids. And I did not lie to Congress,” Clemens said in a posting on Twitter last week. “I look forward to challenging the Governments accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial.”

Clemens is scheduled to appear at a 2 p.m. hearing before US District Judge Reggie Walton, facing six counts of lying to Congress about his use of performance enhancing drugs.

He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and a 1.5 million-dollar fine if convicted on all counts. Realistically, If sentencing guidelines are followed, he would likely face 15 to 21 months in prison. Clemens, reportedly rejected a plea agreement offered by federal prosecutors.

Clemens’ testimony at a February 2008 hearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, contradicted his former trainer, Brian McNamee. The trainer testified that between 1998 and 2001 he injected Clemens with human growth hormone and steroids over 30 times.

The indictment says Clemens obstructed a Congressional inquiry, lied to Congress and committed perjury with 15 statements made under oath, including his denials of ever taking human growth hormone or steroids.

“Roger is looking forward to his day in court,” Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin said. “He is happy this has finally happened. Roger did not use steroids — he did not use HGH — and he did not lie to Congress about it. We’ll let everything get taken care of in court.”

Clemens, nicknamed “The Rocket”, struck out 4,672 batters, winning 354 games over his 23 major league seasons. His 3.12 career earned run average was compiled while pitching for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros.
