New research supports the idea that by turning down the heat in our homes, we can save money as well as encourage our bodies to use more energy

It’s true. You can lose weight and it won’t cost you a dime. As a matter of fact, it can save you a lot of money every year.

A new study just came out in the “Obesity Reviews.” The study, done by Dr. Fiona Johnson of UK Health Behavior Research Center at University College, London, shows how turning down the heat might help you lose weight.

According to her research, they believe that since we are keeping our houses warmer in both the United Kingdom and the United States, we have created what is called “great expectation of thermal comfort.” Basically she says that our bodies are demanding warmer weather, therefore throwing off our body’s natural balance between fats that causes our bodies to gain weight.

In explaining her research, Johnson wrote this statement, “Increased time spent indoors, widespread access to central heating and air conditioning, and increased expectations of thermal comfort all contribute to restricting the range of temperatures we experience in daily life and reduce the time our bodies spend under mild thermal stress — meaning we’re burning less energy.”

Johnson knows that there has been a lot of research done with what we eat and how much we exercise. She wanted to look at other outside factors that could affect a person’s weight.
