New MacBook Air models were announced today during a press event titled “Back to the Mac” at the Apple Inc. headquarters in Cupertino, CA. The models came as a surprise, as is typically the case with Apple, to event attendees.

The Apple first released the MacBook Air as a new ultra-slim model line back in January 2008. It has since offered only small upgrades to the model. Until today. Wednesday’s announcement marks the second major iteration of the model, not only offering increased performance specifications, but an all new design.

Apple announced a replacement to the previous MacBook Air calling it the 13.3 inch model. It will pack an upgraded 1.86 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM, a new LED backlit 13.3 inch screen offering a resolution of 1440×900, and an improved battery. All of this fits in a redesigned case that is smaller and lighter than previous models at a thickness of just 0.68 of an inch at it’s thickest point. Weight is a scant 2.9 pounds.

A second model termed the MacBook Air’s “younger brother” by Steve Jobs during the announcement event, offers an even smaller footprint and lighter weight. The 11.6 inch MacBook Air has an 11.6 inch screen with a resolution of 1366×768, a 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM and weighs in at just 2.3 pounds.

Both models will no longer carry hard drives for storage, but instead will have flash storage options. This affords the systems more reliability, better battery life and improved performance capabilities.

The 13.3 inch model starts at $1299, while the 11.6 inch model has a starting price of $999. Both are available today online at Apple.com as well as in Apple Retail Stores.
