Losing weight is one of the top resolutions people set for the new year

With time to reflect and look back over 2010 it’s not uncommon for people to look ahead to the new year. It represents a clean slate, along with an opportunity to set goals for what they would like to accomplish.

It’s not surprising that the number one resolution is to lose weight. Especially following the holiday season, with plenty of goodies that were consumed, people like to get back on track. The new year brings about that new perspective.

With America becoming increasingly obese, it’s a great goal for many to choose to lose weight or continue on a healthy lifestyle.

Although this is the number one resolution, there are many others out there that people choose. Some of the most common ones for people are to get out of debt or manage their money better, volunteer more and quit smoking.

If you choose to make a New Year’s resolution, just make sure you set realistic goals. One reason why people don’t keep them is they set too high of expectations or they don’t have plan to follow to achieve their goal.

A study done by John Norcross, who is a psychology professor, found that there are a surprising amount of people that make resolutions and keep them. At the end of the first week, 75% maintain their goal, by the end of two weeks there are still 71% sticking with it and by six months it’s still a whopping 46% working towards their goal.
