Scotland’s Dario Franchitti won a second consecutive IndyCar championship title after Australian Will Power ran into trouble by glancing off of the wall during Saturday’s Indy 300 race.

Franchitti’s Ganassi Racing teammate, Scott Dixon of New Zealand, claimed victory in the 200-lap race with Danica Patrick of the United States grabbing second place, edging Brazilian Tony Kanaan in the final race of the 17-event season.

However, Franchitti stole the show when he took the checkered flag. His eight place finish provided enough season points to defeat Power for the crown. Dixon finished third on the season with Brazilian Helio Castroneves finishing in fourth.

Reigning Indy 500 champ Franchitti picked up his 3rd title in 4 years, missing the title in 2008 in an attempt to break compete on the US stock circuit. He is the only driver to win consecutive championships since Sam Hornish won the 2001 and 2002 titles.

Franchitti is just the fifth Indy 500 winner to also win the IndyCar championship title during the same season. His only other victories came at Mid-Ohio and Chicago while Power picked up a total of five victories this year.

Power sat atop the points standings since June 20th, doing extremely well on road courses but never placing higher than 3rd on oval tracks. He led by 11 points at the start of the final race of the season but quickly encountered suspension problems.

Pole-sitter Franchitti led with Power in fourth position when the Australian drifted high and scraped the wall on the135th lap, damaging his car’s rear suspension and ending his hopes for the 2010 IndyCar title.

Power’s crew worked to repair the damage but he had fallen five laps back. He re-entered the race but dropped before long, finishing in 25th place.

After Power dropped out of the race, Franchitti simply had to avoid any track incidents and complete the race in no lower than 10th place to claim his second consecutive championship title.
