Kenny McKinley, 23 year old wide receiver for the Denver Broncos football team, died on Monday from what appears to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

McKinley’s death was confirmed by the Arapahoe County sheriff’s office.

Upon being informed, the team released a statement that it was “deeply saddened”.

The cause of death has not been officially confirmed. However, the Denver Post reports that the death appeared to be a suicide, quoting Arapahoe County sheriff Grayson Robinson.

Robinson said that a female friend of McKinley’s called police when she found the body upon returning from running errands with McKinley’s child. The sheriff did not say if a suicide note was found, adding that the death is still under investigation.

Drafted in the fifth round, 141st overall, in 2009, Kenny McKinley appeared in eight games during his rookie season. He was placed on injured reserve in August as a result of a knee injury..

McKinley’s death is the most recent in a string of tragedies for the Denver Broncos in the past few years. On January 1st, 2007, cornerback Darrent Williams was murdered in a drive-by shooting after a New Year’s party. Just two months later, running back Damien Nash died after playing in a charity basketball event.

McKinley is the tenth NFL player to die since Williams’ death in 2007 and the second player to die this year. In January, Gaines Adams of the Chicago Bears died of cardiac arrest.
