Blackbirds Falling From The Sky

It was raining black birds yesterday in Arkansas when at least 1,000 fell from the sky late Friday night

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is trying to figure out how over 1,000 blackbirds just fell out the sky, dead, on Friday.

About 11:30 pm, police officers started getting reports of dead birds. In a matter of just a few hours, over a thousand birds had fallen from the sky. The birds are spread over a one mile area of the city. It appears that there are no other birds involved, just the black birds.

About 65 birds have been collected by the wildlife agency, according to officer, Robby King. They will take those birds in for testing to try and determine the cause of death. The birds will be taken to the Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab that is located in Madison, Wisconsin.

The birds do show some physical trauma. That could be anything from being hit by lightening to flying through a hail storm.

They are also looking into the possibility of those celebrating New Year’s Eve by shooting off fireworks could have startled them and even caused them to die from stress. Although that doesn’t fall into the right time frame.

They are pretty sure the birds were not poisoned since it didn’t involve any other types of birds. Even though they will be tested, in the past when things like this happen, the test results usually come up inconclusive. Testing will begin on Monday and the test results will be published later this week.
